"Alongside [his] research-driven representations, Tandel takes a leap within his oeuvre of resin-based sculptures presenting a cluster of siphonophores, similar to jellyfish, found in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Known as Portuguese Man O’War, it gets its name from a brightly coloured gas-filled bladder, or pneumatophore, which sits above the water and resembles an old warship at full sail. Below the attractive surface organ, the creature sports long, thin tentacles, covered in venom used to paralyze and kill fish and other small creatures. The aesthetically alluring piece reflects the fallacious "civilising" agenda of all colonial forces, whose effects are being counteracted by these very methods of archiving."
