This body of work features digital photographs taken over the from 2008 to 2014 across seven major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. The intention of the works is to explore the patterns of vanishing professions and the attempts of the professionals to adapt. Many of the skilled artisans documented are now struggling to survive.
The photographs look particularly at the vibrant variety of people, textures and colours that we will be losing out on as these professions cease to operate. Here, Clare is able to stunningly capture unique vistas of the cities she explores, looking not
only at occupations that will be lost to us, but also sights and places that are rapidly evolving into a colder, unfamiliar space. In each place the artist and her researcher – Oriole Henry – researched the professions traditionally associated with the city or state. They also looked at the broader traditional trades that are being marginalised and are disappearing across the urban landscape.
