Each work in Saubiya Chasmawala’s Batin is immediate, like a cry. To begin, she places a sheet of paper on the floor. She chooses the appropriate tool, a calligraphy tool, with metal clips that adjust the depth and texture of the ink. She bends onto the page, and floats her body over the paper —a total immersion. Chasmawala insists that the work does not have a subject; instead, it is pure process.
