With paper as her medium of choice, this work is part of the artist’s growing practice of looking at and recreating various species from nature, some real and some imagined. Growing up on the Konkan coast and currently living in Murud-Janjira, Sikander is surrounded by nature and her works are a reflection of that love (rati) for nature. Furthermore, coming from a family of nature lovers, she has always had a tremendous compassion (karuna) for overlooked creatures. With research and use of reference images of these species, she has ventured further to use her imagination while creating these works, layer upon layer, focusing on certain parts of the particular insect. There is a clear interest in the texture, colour and form of each of these individual species, highlighting the merge of different shades of colour within the wings of a moth, the furry texture on the backs of some bugs or the body of a moth and focus on the shape, size and subtle webbed lines within the wings of different insects to name a few.
