Traditionally, the Kolis have prayed to natural and ancestral forces via the conduit of an armature embellished with fresh flowers and leaves gathered from surrounding forests. Done on the full moon, the भराली Bharali puja remembered those who have been lost in the tides, and asked for protection for those children who will start their odysseys into deep waters. Previously seen in Tandel’s widely popular series वर्णांध/ Color Blind, the artist now reclaims the sculptural form with motifs of oceanic ancestors. Similar to the found fauna that is collected for these prayers, Tandel collates marine motifs that are familiar within his everyday life: crabs, manta rays, squids, and lobsters all feature in Koli archives. Honouring kinship systems such as the prohibition of fishing during the monsoon months when mating and reproduction is at high, this ecstatic assemblage of wind, water, sun, sand, and species provokes protection for all forms of coastal life in the wake of extreme urbanization that threatens these fragile ecosystems.
