Savia Mahajan’s most recent iteration of ceramic books, titled Pietra, assert the affinity of her artistic process with exploring materials and objects and their interaction. Deliberate impact and pressure on the works, composed of integrated paper and clay, is applied by throwing or fitting foraged rocks of different shapes and sizes. The element of chance allows for forms to reveal themselves along with the material dictating the incorporation of colors and mild glazes. Mahajan forages objects and pigments from her travels across Rajasthan, Bhuj, the Konkan region and so on. The artist’s process cultivates a constant dialogue between making and breaking which has become very integral to her practice.
