Thieves’ Market by Areez Katki, commissioned for his exhibition at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in 2022, is an intricate tapestry woven frieze composed of fragments and references aiming to retrieve lost, excavated, and in some cases stolen, ephemera that now lives primarily behind glass cases in European museums. The ‘fragments’ are crafted in the Zoroastrian tōran beadwork technique that the artist has inherited from his maternal great-grandmother.
