In this drawing, the male and female inflorescence of the palm oil, Elaeis guineensis, sit side by side. As the light comes into this work, one can see some text filtering through. This text is the forest fire data from the larger Southeast Asian region where illegal expansion of the palm oil plantations has caused large scale fires. In late 1980's, the scientists working at UNIPAMOL introduced a species of weevil, Elaeidobius kamerunicus, from Cameroon into Johor, Malaysia. Pollination of palm oil in the region that previously depended on slow and uncertain pollination mechanisms such as wind, sped up enormously due to the introduction of this weevil. This aided production, incentivized illegal plantation expansion and started a pattern of wild and often unextinguishable forest fires that burn every year.
